DISASTER ALERT: Democratic Republic of the Congo Population Movement

Democratic Republic of the Congo Population Movement

Violence in the Central African Republic (CAR) has sparked a cross-border migration of refugees into Equateur, a province in the north of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, over 21,300 refugees from CAR have crossed the border, including a number of unaccompanied minors. This number is up from 4,000 people just one month ago.

Initial assessments have raised concerns about health, nutrition and protection for this population.
Immediate needs include temporary shelter, food and reconnecting family members who have been separated.

Over the last four months the DRC Red Cross has supported 345 displaced families with basic relief supplies, health services, water and sanitation activities and support with reconnecting family members. As needs increase the global Red Cross network is supporting the relief operation with additional assistance.

The American Red Cross has deployed one disaster management specialist to lead the Red Cross Field Assessment and Coordination Team. This multi-national team will work closely with the DRC Red Cross to support assessments and response planning.
