Disaster Alert: Tropical Storm Sandy

Disaster Alert

Florida – Sandy is located 155 miles north of Great Abaco Island and about 350 south-southeast of Charleston, South Carolina and is moving north-northeast at 10 mph. On the forecast track, additional strengthening is expected and Sandy may return to Hurricane status by Monday.

States of Emergency declared in New York, Pennsylvania, Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia.

Chapters are preparing to do the five initial actions and are determining the staff and material resources they have available. Conference calls continue in the regions. There are 121 Emergency Response Vehicles (ERV’s) on alert. Four Leadership Teams have been created based on current availability rosters. Four Advanced Public Affairs Teams (APAT) are en route to MD, NJ and NY. Disaster responders are being contacted and placed on alert along the east coast. Red Cross Government Liaison Officers are prepared to staff FEMA Regional Response Coordination Centers and the National Response Coordination Center.

The Disaster Operation Center is now activated at a Status III Level with all Groups and Activities present during the core hours of 8am-8pm.
