STORY: Red Cross volunteer in Tampa

On her seventh disaster deployment for Hurricane Isaac in Tampa, Linda Southerland, a spry and spunky 69 year-old, from the Grant Wood Area Chapter in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, knows the value of Red Cross volunteers.

She signed up as a volunteer herself just four years ago during the Iowa floods, a flood that forever changed several Iowa communities.

Today, Linda is a supervisor and teacher of client casework, along with being a trained ERV driver. Linda underscores the importance of accuracy in 901 write ups, noting that she has personally reviewed hundreds of them over the past four years.

She says, “Clients caught in a disaster have access to a number of federal and state programs to help them in recovery, but their case must be properly documented.”
